Something Old, Something New

Something borrowed, something green… Wait… What?

Let me start by just addressing the elephant in the room, or should I say monster

I spent a year planning every little detail of our wedding for it to be perfect.

And thisthis is how my husband decides to walk down the aisle.

Leave it to my husband to always have the spotlight on him. The man joked for a year if I’d stand up at the aisle, and, instead, he could walk down while everyone watched him. Don’t worry, he let me have my moment while he stood upfront hiding his tears.

To be clear, I was aware and approved of my husband doing this. The “why” still remains a big mystery, but can pretty much be summed up as boys will be boys.

About two months into dating, I got a call from Joe one night. “Theoretically, would you ever let your husband wear one green shoe down the aisle at your wedding for a bet?”

I laughed, specified that he did say only “down the aisle,” and agreed to what I didn’t realize was my future.

About 15 years ago, Joe and his best friend made this bet back in college. $1,000 for one green shoe down the aisle of either of their weddings. Obviously, his friend’s wife didn’t let that happen because that’s the most obvious response to something like this. I’m not really the type to go with the expected answer, though.

Of course, there were some terms to this bet. Joe’s friend would get to pick the shoe, but nothing that would require Joe to walk lopsided or anything offensive. Neither of them were able to laugh during this spectacle. And my most important one, it was only down the aisle, so by the time I walked, Joe would be wearing two normal shoes again.

Over the year leading up to our special day, many of our guests were aware of the green shoe, most were not. The confusion probably made it even better, though.

Joe’s fearlessness and joy for making people laugh is definitely one of the many reasons I love him. As I prepared to walk down the aisle, my eyes filled with tears, but as soon as I heard the uproar from all our friends and family as he appeared, a smile quickly took over my face.

So on that sunny October day in San Diego, I married the love of my life, and agreed to his antics for today, tomorrow and forever.
